Parramatta City Council recognizes Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, and Greek Genocides
PARRAMATTA, Australia — The City Council of Parramatta, New South Wales, has officially recognized the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, and Greek Genocides, Neos Kosmos reports. The official recognition marks a powerful moment of truth and remembrance for the local community.
The motion, passed earlier this week, was moved by Councilor Tanya Raffoul — herself a descendant of an Armenian Genocide survivor — and seconded by Councilor Anthony Ellard. The resolution reflects a growing commitment across Australia to acknowledge historical injustices and honors the memory of those who suffered.
“This decision is a powerful act of moral leadership and solidarity,” said a representative of the Federation. “It stands with over 6,000 Australians of Armenian, Assyrian, and Greek heritage in the Parramatta local government area, many of whom carry the legacy of these historical traumas.”
As part of the resolution, Parramatta Council will also establish a memorial garden and plaque to honor the victims — a symbolic and lasting tribute to those who lost their lives during the genocides of the early 20th century.
