Turkish MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder in critical condition following emergency heart surgery
ANKARA, Turkey — Sırrı Süreyya Önder, Deputy Speaker of the Turkish Parliament and a prominent figure in the pro-Kurdish political movement, remains in critical condition after undergoing a 12-hour emergency heart surgery in Istanbul. The operation, prompted by a severe cardiac episode, involved complex procedures including coronary bypass and aortic grafting. Önder, who was rushed to the hospital following a heart attack, is currently on life support in the intensive care unit.
Political leaders across Turkey have expressed their solidarity and sent messages of support, including former HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş and representatives from various political parties such as the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). The National Intelligence Organization and Istanbul’s governor have also been closely monitoring the situation.
Önder’s critical health condition has led to the postponement of a scheduled meeting between the İmralı delegation, which he is a part of, and the Turkish Minister of Justice. Known for his advocacy for peace and democracy, Önder has played a pivotal role in past negotiations aimed at resolving conflicts in Turkey. His contributions to the cultural and political landscape, including his work as a filmmaker and journalist, have made him a respected figure among diverse communities, including the Syriac population.
Born in Adıyaman in 1962, Önder’s life has been marked by his relentless struggle for justice and freedom, often at great personal cost. His hospitalization has sparked widespread concern, with many hoping for his recovery and return to his duties. The incident underscores the immense stress and challenges faced by political figures in Turkey, particularly those involved in peace-building efforts.
