Tenth Women’s Art and Literature Festival kicks off in Beth Zalin (Qamishli)
BETH ZALIN (QAMISHLI), North and East Syria — The 10th Women’s Art and Literature Festival has officially begun in Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, bringing together dozens of female artists and writers from across the region.
Held under the slogan “Free Art is the Voice and Color of Women,” the festival opened in Azadi Park with vibrant participation from women representing the diverse communities of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria. The event, which typically coincides with International Women’s Day in March, was postponed to April this year due to ongoing Turkish military attacks on the Region.
In her opening remarks, Siham Qaryo, Co-Chair of the Democratic Peoples’ Council, emphasized the pivotal role of women in the Autonomous Administration project, noting that women in the region have become global symbols of leadership in literature, art, and culture. Feryal Joli, Co-Chair of the Culture Board in Gozarto (Jazira) Canton and a member of the festival’s preparatory committee, welcomed attendees, describing the festival as a reflection of the Democratic Nation project, which promotes coexistence and unity among all communities.
The first day featured performances by the Stera Zerin musical group, poetry readings by Ayfer Yildiztan, and a traditional Armenian dance performance by the Anoush Abidian troupe. The festival’s diverse program highlights the rich cultural tapestry of the region.
The Women’s Art and Literature Festival has been an annual tradition since its inception, celebrating women’s contributions to art and culture. This year’s event underscores the resilience of women in North and East Syria, who continue to create and inspire despite the challenges posed by conflict and instability.
