Armenian Patriarchate in Turkey to Commemorate Genocide Victims with Divine Liturgy

ISTANBUL — The Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey announced it will hold a special liturgy on Thursday, April 24, to honor the memory of the victims of the 1915 genocide. The service will take place at the Surp Vartanants Church in Istanbul.

In an official statement, the Patriarchate said the ceremony, titled “Commemoration of Our Righteous Martyrs,” will be presided over by His Beatitude Patriarch Sahak II and led by Father Yeghishe Uskunyan.

The observance, deeply rooted in the Armenian collective memory, marks the mass killing of Armenians under the Ottoman Empire, an event widely recognized as genocide.

The morning will begin with hymns performed by clergy and church officials, followed by liturgical chants sung by the Surp Vartanants Church choir during the main service. The liturgy is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., following a session of morning chants at 9:00 a.m.

The Patriarchate extended an open invitation to members of the Armenian community, its leadership, and faithful from across the country to attend what it described as both a spiritual and national act of remembrance.
