Barcelona Club and Partner Organizations Launch Sports Projects in Northeast Syria

KOBANI, Syria — A delegation from Barcelona, Spain, has announced its readiness to implement sports projects aimed at fostering development and community cohesion in Northeast Syria. The initiative, unveiled during a press conference in Kobani, will primarily focus on engaging children and their families across several cities in the region.

This ambitious effort is spearheaded by FC Barcelona, in collaboration with local and international organizations, including Novact, Doz, La Caserna, UPP, and Casa Nostra Casa Vostra. According to Walat Abdulrahman, director of the Doz Organization, the project will span 20 months, covering Kobani, Raqqa, Hasakah, and Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah), with activities targeting children aged 8 to 14 years.

The project’s cornerstone is the establishment of mini-football academies in each participating city, aimed at teaching children fundamental football skills while fostering values such as teamwork and inclusivity. Complementing these sports-focused initiatives, activities will also engage parents, encouraging them to play active roles in promoting social cohesion and peace-building within their communities. The program will culminate in a two-day football tournament in Zalin (Qamishli), bringing together children from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds across the region.

Former Barcelona player Oleguer Presas, now a member of La Caserna, described the initiative as a transformative effort. “We believe football is a powerful tool for bringing communities together and building a culture of peace,” said Presas. “Through these activities, we aim to instill values that promote solidarity and mutual respect.”

Beyond technical sports training, the academies aim to address broader social challenges in the region. Abdulrahman explained that the project incorporates a curriculum designed to teach life skills, improve intercommunity relations, and foster an inclusive environment for future generations. The methodology leverages football as a universal language to build trust and understanding among participants from different communities.

This initiative holds special significance for families in Northeast Syria, many of whom have endured the hardships of conflict and displacement. By engaging children in structured and meaningful activities, the project seeks to offer them a sense of normalcy, belonging, and future aspirations.

Partner organizations noted that the impact of the program will be measured through increased participation, strengthened social bonds, and the development of local leadership within the communities.
