Syriac youngster Grace Koki wins Young Women in Leadership Award in Sweden

STOCKHOLM Seventeen-year-old Grace Koki, a young woman of Syriac (Assyrian–Chaldean-Aramean) origin, was awarded the highly respected Young Women in Leadership Award by Zonta International organization in Sweden. This recognition honors her remarkable leadership, unwavering commitment to community service, and her role as a voice for the underrepresented, making her a symbol of hope and determination for her peers and community.

Koki’s roots trace back to the historic region of Beth Nahrain (Mesopotamia), a cradle of ancient civilizations and culture. Her journey began when she and her family immigrated to Sweden in 2013. Despite the challenges of adapting to a new culture and language, Koki quickly found her passion in advocacy work, focusing on volunteerism and human rights, with a particular emphasis on the rights of children.

Her leadership abilities shone brightly as the chair of the Botkyrka Youth Council, where she successfully spearheaded initiatives that bridged gaps between different youth communities. Her role involved organizing events, promoting dialogue, and empowering young people to actively participate in shaping their future. These efforts played a significant role in her selection for Zonta International’s prestigious award, which celebrates young women who demonstrate exceptional leadership and advocate for the rights of women and girls.

In a heartfelt reflection on her journey, Koki expressed her gratitude to the Botkyrka community. “Botkyrka has been transformative for me,” she said. “It’s where I’ve grown, both personally and academically. The support and encouragement from the people here have truly helped me unlock my potential.”

The award also highlights Koki’s advocacy for gender equality. She has consistently championed the importance of women’s empowerment, using her platform to address issues such as access to education, social inclusion, and equal opportunities. Her dedication and perseverance have not only inspired those around her but have also set a powerful example of the impact young leaders can have.

When discussing the challenges she faced, Koki acknowledged that every stage of life brings its own hurdles. “There will always be obstacles,” she said, “but determination and resilience are what carve the path forward.” She emphasized the importance of staying true to one’s goals and persevering in the face of adversity.

Koki’s message to her peers carries a sense of urgency and inspiration. “Don’t let others define your limitations,” she urged. “Your dreams and aspirations are boundless, set them free, and let your passion lead you.”
