Syrian Kurds’ Unity Conference draws praise from local administration, condemnation from Daramsuq (Damascus)
NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — The Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) has welcomed the outcomes of the Kurdish Unity Conference which produced a joint political document outlining Kurdish rights and visions for Syria’s future. The DAARNES praised the conference as a step toward a united, democratic Syria that guarantees full national rights for all citizens.
The DAARNES also highlighted the Kurdish people’s resolve and thanked international supporters, including the U.S., France and Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government. It emphasized continued dialogue with Syrian Transitional Government (STG) to secure minority rights and draft a new democratic constitution.
Meanwhile, the STG condemned the gathering, accusing it of pursuing federalism and demographic changes. The STG denounced the conference, labeling it a threat to Syria’s territorial unity and a “red line.” It accused the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) of restricting civilian movement and monopolizing resources in North and East Syria. It also insisted that Kurdish rights must be addressed within a unified Syrian state, rejecting external interference.
The divide underscores tensions between the DAARNES demands and STG centralized governance model. The Kurdish proposal aligns with broader calls for decentralization in post-war Syria.
