IRAQ: Chaldean Archdiocese of Alqosh celebrates commemoration of Shira Mar Odisho in Nineveh Plains

ALQOSH, Iraq — For the third consecutive year, the Chaldean Archdiocese of Alqosh commemorated the season of Shira Mar Odisho in the village of Nusayriya in Nineveh Plains in northern Iraq. The event was held at Mar Odisho Church, creating an atmosphere of faith and spiritual celebration.

The ceremony began with prayers, followed by a solemn procession led by Archbishop of Alqosh Mar Boulos Thabet and parish priest Father Rudy al-Safar. They were joined by deacons, Father Arkan Hakim, and a large gathering of worshippers from Alqosh and nearby areas.

Following the prayers, the congregation carried the Holy Cross in a reverent procession around the church, accompanied by hymns and prayers.

The Mar Odisho commemoration resumed in 2023 after a 22-year hiatus, reviving a cherished tradition.

The Mar Odisho Church, built in 1850 in honor of the monk Odisho, was attached to the Archdiocese of Alqosh in 2000 and later restored. In addition to its spiritual significance, the site includes a simple museum that visitors can explore, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich Christian heritage.
