Syrian and Iraqi organizations mark International Workers’ Day with calls for solidarity and labor rights

DARAMSUQ — As the world commemorates International Workers’ Day on 1 May , or May Day, organizations in Syria and Iraq issued statements honoring the resilience and contributions of workers while reaffirming their commitment to labor rights and equality.

The Beth Nahrain Patriotic Union (Huyodo d’Bethnahrin Athroyo, HBA) extended warm congratulations to workers globally, with particular emphasis on Iraq’s labor force. The party praised the tireless efforts of workers striving to improve their lives with dignity and determination. It highlighted the critical role workers play in national development and pledged unwavering support for their rights.

Similarly, the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), affiliated with the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) expressed solidarity with workers worldwide. The SDC recognized the sacrifices of Syrian workers who have endured displacement, poverty, and hardship during years of conflict. Despite these challenges, workers remain pillars of hope and perseverance, contributing to the rebuilding of their communities.

In its statement, the SDC reaffirmed its commitment to defending workers’ rights and fostering equitable conditions that uphold social justice. It emphasized its vision for a pluralistic, decentralized, and democratic framework that prioritizes human dignity and values the labor force.

International Workers’ Day traces its origins to the 19th-century industrial revolution in the United States. European immigrant workers, who formed a significant portion of the workforce, endured long hours and minimal pay. In the 1880s, the American Federation of Labor led a general strike on 1 May, demanding an eight-hour workday. The strike mobilized over 300,000 participants, establishing 1 May as a global symbol of labor rights and achievements.

As nations reflect on the importance of workers, statements from Syrian and Iraqi organizations underscore the enduring significance of solidarity, collective action, and the pursuit of social justice in fostering a better future for all.
