Israeli Airstrikes Target Key Syrian Installations as Druze Leaders Sound the Alarm

DARAMSUQ (DAMASCUS) – In a dramatic escalation overnight, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) executed two precision airstrikes against strategic military sites in Syria. The operations come amid growing sectarian tensions and renewed calls by Druze leaders for more robust state protections for their communities. 

The first strike occurred near Daramsuq (Damascus), adjacent to the Presidential Palace of the Syrian Transitional President Ahmad al-Sharaa. Israeli fighter jets targeted an area considered critical by the Syrian regime, sending a strong warning to Daramsuq (Damascus) not to allow conditions that jeopardize the well-being of local Druze minorities. This operation, described by Israeli officials as a preventive measure against potential threats to vulnerable communities, underlines Israel’s policy to act decisively when lives are at stake. 

A second airstrike was carried out in western Syria. According state-run media and corroborated by reports from The Times of Israel, this attack hit a military installation located in one of the regions encompassing either Latakia or Hemto (Hama). Syrian state news agencies noted that the broader operation involved strikes across several provinces—including areas in Daraa in the south—aimed at dismantling anti-aircraft and surface-to-air missile systems.  

This Israeli multi-pronged approach is part of an effort to preempt further destabilization that might otherwise impact the Druze community. 

Reactions and Remarks from Druze Leaders

The airstrikes have ignited a series of responses from Druze leaders on both sides of the border. Prominent Syrian Druze figures have lambasted the Syrian government for failing to adequately protect their community. Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hijri, a well-known spiritual leader, condemned what he termed an “unjustified genocidal attack” on the minority, stressing that a robust state presence is imperative along key routes such as the Sweida-Daramsuq (Damascus) highway.  

Meanwhile, Druze community leaders in Israel have organized demonstrations, underscoring their longstanding demand for enhanced security measures to ensure that their brethren in Syria are not left vulnerable. 

Local hospitals in north Syria have reported casualties, with several injured Druze civilians. Some of the wounded were later evacuated to Israeli medical facilities, highlighting both the human cost and the cross-border scope of the current crisis. 

Official Statements and the Road Ahead

Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, have stated that these operations send a clear message to Syrian leadership. “We will not allow any threat to the Druze community,” they declared, emphasizing the measures taken to deter further violent escalation. In response,  

Daramsuq decried the strikes as violations of national sovereignty, warning that such actions would only complicate efforts to restore stability within Syria.
