Formation of Levantine National Council announced in Daramsuq (Damascus) in historic announcement

DARAMSUQ — In a historic announcement made today in Daramsuq (Damascus), a group of Syrian Christians declared the establishment of the Levantine National Council, a new initiative aiming to reshape Syria’s future. This marks a significant milestone in the country’s complex socio-political landscape.

In its statement, read by Rimon Rahal, the Council said it was dedicated to organizing Syria ethnically and denominationally diverse Christian community to ensure their role in rebuilding a sovereign, democratic, and pluralistic Syria. The statement emphasized the group’s commitment to the principles of the Syrian revolution — freedom, dignity, and justice.

The founders of the Council highlighted the historical and integral role of Christians in the region, tracing their presence in Syria to the cradle of early Eastern civilizations. They acknowledged the community’s contributions to modern Syrian state-building, education, culture, and the promotion of an inclusive national identity.

The Levantine National Council seeks to represent Syrian Christians in political and civil life, defend their rights, and contribute to “building a state of citizenship based on the neutrality of the state toward all ethnicities, cultures, and religions.”
