European Syriac Union welcomes formation of Levantine National Council, hails it as historic step

BRUSSELS — Following the announcement of the formation of the Levantine National Council in Daramsuq (Damascus), Syria, the European Syriac Union (ESU) released a statement commending the initiative.

The ESU described the Council’s formation as a “courageous and historic move” with significant implications for Syria’s Christian communities and Christians across the Middle East. The statement praised the Council as a hopeful vision emerging from adversity, emphasizing its potential to reshape the future for these communities.

The ESU highlighted the Council’s affirmation of the “active and institutional role” Christians play in building a society rooted in freedom, dignity, and justice. Special mention was made of the Christian communities in the Wadi al-Nasara (Valley of Christians) region, underscoring their importance in Syria’s socio-political landscape.

Expressing solidarity with the Levantine National Council and all Christian communities in Syria, the ESU voiced anticipation for the upcoming founding conference, which is expected to formalize the Council’s structure and goals.

In its closing remarks, the ESU expressed hope that the Council’s efforts would contribute to the creation of a new Syria founded on peace, coexistence, and national reconciliation among all its people.
