European Syriac Union marks 21st anniversary, reaffirms commitment to international struggle for Syriac rights

BRUSSELS — The European Syriac Union (ESU) celebrated its 21st anniversary, reflecting on a legacy of struggle and dedication to the rights and aspirations of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people around the world. Since its founding, the ESUacted as a pivotal force in advocating for the community, bridging the diaspora with their homeland of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) and amplifying their voice internationally.

Founded on 15 May 2002, in Brussels with representatives from multiple countries, the ESU marked a transformative step in institutional advocacy. Over two decades, the ESU has become a cornerstone in the ongoing fight for the rights and recognition of its people, steadfastly addressing the challenges faced both at home and abroad.

The ESU was established against a backdrop of exclusion, persecution, massacres, denial, and widespread forced displacement. This grim reality underscored the need for a unifying entity to connect the diaspora with their ancestral homeland and provide a platform for their collective voice.

Over 21 years, the ESU has collaborated with affiliated organizations and institutions, engaging hundreds of members and volunteers. Through these efforts, the Union has forged strong connections with influential European and international institutions, advocating for the community’s rights and raising awareness of their plight.

The ESU has organized numerous conferences, public demonstrations, and awareness-raising activities across European cities, ensuring the suffering and aspirations of their people reach a global audience.

In a statement marking the anniversary, the ESU expressed heartfelt gratitude to its members, collaborators, supporters, and sympathizers. The Union reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the cause of the Chaldean, Syriac, and Assyrian people.

“The European Syriac Union will remain faithful to the destiny of our people, continuing the historic struggle to secure a future that guarantees their dignity and existence,” the statement concluded.

The ESU pledges to continue its mission, striving for a future where the rights and identity of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) communities are preserved and celebrated.
