Former Iraqi National Football Team icon Korkis Ismail passes away at 81
BAGHDAD — The Iraq Football Association announced the passing of former national team player and long-time association administrator Korkis Ismail on Saturday evening. He was 81 years old.
In an official statement, the association expressed its deepest condolences to Ismail’s family and praised his contributions to Iraqi football, both on and off the field.
Born in 1943 in Habbaniyah, Anbar Province, to Christian parents, Ismail made a lasting impact as a central striker for Iraq’s national team. Between 1962 and 1969, he earned nine caps and scored three goals. His career highlights included winning the Arab Cup in 1966, held in Baghdad, alongside his teammates.
Following his retirement as a player, Ismail dedicated himself to administrative roles within the Iraq Football Association, serving until the early 1990s. He was part of the national delegation at the historic 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, further cementing his legacy in Iraqi football.
