Södertälje’s St. Ephrem Church expands Syriac language courses to all ages

SÖDERTÄLJE, Sweden — The Syriac Orthodox St. Ephrem Church in Södertälje, Sweden, introduced an expanded series of Syriac language courses, drawing participants from across generations, including young people and the elderly. Traditionally focused on children, the program now reflects a broader interest in preserving the Syriac language within the community.

The Syriac Association in Sweden reports a growing desire among younger generations to reconnect with their linguistic heritage. Over recent months, youth have gathered weekly at St. Ephrem Church for lessons.

Two young deacons, Emmanuel Hinno and Andreas Hanna, have dedicated their free time to teaching the language. As members of the youth themselves, they bring enthusiasm and a shared commitment to preserving their cultural identity.

Among the students are Mikael-Jan and his wife, Filiz, who view learning Syriac as both a personal and cultural obligation. Having grown up in Sweden with limited exposure to the language, Mikael-Jan initially knew only some Arabic and a few Syriac words. Despite finding it challenging to memorize vocabulary, the couple strives to converse exclusively in Syriac at home.

“Although I can’t yet express my thoughts and feelings in Syriac as fluently as I can in Swedish, I’m determined to learn the language to help preserve it,” Mikael said.

This initiative by St. Ephrem Church highlights a renewed commitment to maintaining and revitalizing Syriac as a living language within the diaspora community.
