Bethnahrin National Council congress reaffirms commitment to national rights and unity

BETH NAHRIN — The Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB) held its annual congress on Saturday under the slogan The Congress of National Struggle, issuing a closing statement that reaffirmed its dedication to advancing the national, political, and cultural rights of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people at a critical political juncture in Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

The congress, chaired by Council President Michael Naim Hadodo, convened 120 members of the administrative leadership from Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Turkey, and Europe. Attendees reviewed institutional performance, political developments, and strategies for regional coordination among community organizations.

The event opened with a tribute to the MUB’s martyrs, particularly Hawro (Comrade) İzla Neriman Özgun, a symbolic figure in the Council’s struggle. “The congress convened in the spirit of martyr İzla and all the martyrs who continue to illuminate our path,” the final statement read.

In his keynote address, President Hadodo offered a comprehensive analysis of current political dynamics. He urged the MUB to seize emerging opportunities while addressing mounting challenges, emphasizing the need for unity, strategic planning, and enhanced political representation. “The sacrifices made by our people have not been in vain,” Hadodo stated. “We carry a historical responsibility to ensure that the aspirations of our nation are realized within the evolving Middle Eastern landscape.”

The MUB statement highlighted the increasing volatility in the region, warning of signs pointing to “a third world war in the making.” Despite these challenges, it celebrated the rise of a unified national consciousness among the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, both in their homeland and across the diaspora.

“In every part of our homeland and throughout the diaspora, we witness a deepening sense of national purpose, political maturity, and cultural resilience,” the statement noted. “Our institutions are converging around shared goals, as our people seek just solutions to reclaim their rightful place in history.”

Marking the 25th anniversary of its founding, the MUB pledged to preserve and build upon the political and organizational achievements of the past. Leaders underscored their commitment to establishing a democratic system in the Middle East, where their people can live freely with dignity and full recognition of their national identity.

The congress concluded with several resolutions, including efforts to secure the inclusion of the community’s political, cultural, and educational rights in a future Syrian constitution. Additionally, the Council endorsed joint action plans with other national institutions, reaffirming its dedication to national unity and collective progress.
