Syriac Union Party Urges Lebanese Authorities to Implement UNSC Resolution 1559
BEIRUT – In its regular meeting, the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP), issued a stark warning over the dire consequences of Lebanon’s continued failure to fulfill its international obligations—most notably the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1701 and 1559, which call for the assertion of state authority and the complete disarmament of Hezbollah, a militia operating outside the bounds of state legitimacy.
The party described this ongoing breakdown in reform and transparency as a major blow to what remains of Lebanon’s credibility on the global stage. It argued that without fundamental structural reforms and a governance model anchored in accountability, the country risks losing out on any genuine opportunity for international support—or for playing a constructive role in a new regional order based on sovereignty, stability, and sustainable development.
Reaffirming its national stance, the USUP held Lebanon’s political establishment fully responsible for the worsening state of the country. It called for decisive actions that include the disarmament of Hezbollah and all Palestinian factions, the placement of all camps under the authority of the Lebanese army, and the immediate initiation of national reform efforts. These efforts, it said, must begin with restoring transparency, removing corrupt figures from public institutions, and ending the entrenched system of patronage and political favoritism.
The USUP further called for Lebanon to reposition itself as a credible and responsible member of the international community—one capable of forging partnerships that can help rescue the nation’s deteriorating institutions. It also stressed the urgency of adopting a federal system, arguing that such a structure is essential to preserving Lebanon’s pluralism and encouraging cultural and developmental progress.
Ignoring these priorities, the statement warned, would only deepen Lebanon’s global isolation, intensify its domestic decline, and forfeit a historic opportunity to be part of shaping the region’s future—instead of becoming a liability to it.
“It is time for a real national awakening—one that rises above narrow sectarian interests and paralyzing political wagers,” the party concluded. “Lebanon cannot be saved without sovereign and courageous decisions that restore the state’s legitimacy. Turning a blind eye to illicit arms, entrenched corruption, and dysfunctional governance will only push the country further toward collapse. The choice is stark: rebuild the state or watch it unravel.”
