Establishment of Sayfo monument in Qabre Hewore, North and East Syria, approved

QABRE HEWORE, North and East Syria — The municipality of Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniya), North and East Syria, has approved the application for a Sayfo monument. The application, submitted by the Syriac Union Party (SUP), seeks permission to erect a memorial in honor of the 110th anniversary of the 1915 Sayfo Genocide.

According to a local spokesperson for the SUP, the foundation stone for the monument will be laid this Sunday, 15 June, during the annual Sayfo commemoration. The monument will be erected in the main street of the city.

On 15 June, Syriacs (Aramean–Assyrians–Chaldeans) will hold commemorations worldwide to commemorate the premeditated massacres carried out by the Ottoman Empire and allied Kurdish tribes. During the twilight days of the Ottoman Empire, the campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide perpetrated by the Turkish Ottoman authorities and its Kurdish tribal allies nearly erased thousands of years of Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean), Armenian, and Greek presence in what is now Turkey.
