Syrian President issues decree forming Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections
DARAMSUQ (DAMASCUS) — Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has issued a presidential decree to form the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections.
Bearing the No. 66 of 2025, the presidential decree stipulated establishing the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections. According to the decree, the committee will consist of 7 members, chaired by Muhammad Taha al-Ahmad. Its primary task will be overseeing the formation of subsidiary electoral bodies responsible for electing two-thirds of the People’s Assembly members.
The decree also stipulates that the People’s Assembly will comprise 150 members, distributed among provinces based on population size, categorized under notables and intellectuals, with eligibility criteria set by the Supreme Electoral Committee.
The decree states that one-third of the members will be appointed by the President of the Republic, while the remaining two-thirds will be elected through recognized electoral committees, allocated across provinces according to their population.
Holeb (Aleppo) province will have the largest representation, with around 20 members, while Quneitra will have the smallest, with only 2 members.
