Syriac Maronite archbishops abroad advocate for diaspora voting rights in meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun
BEIRUT — During a meeting with President Joseph Aoun, Syriac Maronite archbishops called for the definitive repeal of Article 110 in the existing election law, asserting that this change is essential to uphold the rights of Lebanese expatriates to vote in upcoming parliamentary elections from their registered constituencies in Lebanon.
The archbishops emphasized that safeguarding this right is a cornerstone of their enduring connection to their homeland and urged the government to ensure equal political rights for expatriates and residents alike.
President Aoun acknowledged the vital role of the diaspora archbishops in fostering strong ties between Lebanon and its expatriate communities. He reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing these connections, noting the importance of bridging distances between residents and those abroad.
Aoun also highlighted ongoing government initiatives aimed at progress, describing them as small but determined steps to fulfill the aspirations of Lebanese citizens, whether at home or abroad.
This meeting underscores a shared vision to strengthen Lebanon’s unity and political inclusivity, reflecting the nation’s commitment to its global diaspora.
