Syriac political parties and civil society organizations call for Syrian government to do more to protect minority places of worship after attack on Mar Elias Church in Daramsuq

DARAMSUQ — Syriac political parties and civil society organizations condemned the terrorist attack that targeted the Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Church of Mar Elias which martyred 28 worshippers and left dozens of others wounded.

The Syriac Union Party (SUP) condemned the terrorist attack, stating that, “The attack seeks to threaten Christians in Syria and force them to flee their homeland.”

In a statement, the SUP held the Syrian government responsible for uncovering the circumstances of this attack, which has shaken the conscience of all Syrians.

The SUP reaffirmed the Syrian people’s commitment to national unity, coexistence, and standing against those who seek to sow discord and exploit sectarian divisions. It called on the Syrian government to protect Christians and all religious and ethnic minorities, warning that if it fails to do so, they will rely on their own means to defend themselves against looming threats.

Meanwhile, the European Syriac Union (ESU) denounced the horrific terrorist attack, stating that targeting innocent civilians practicing their faith is not only a direct assault on a religious community but also a vile attack on humanity’s collective conscience.

It emphasized that such acts constitute a grave violation of religious freedom, social peace and fundamental human rights.

The ESU statement stressed that these repeated attacks are not random but part of a deliberate campaign to intimidate and uproot Syria’s Christian community, aiming to erase their existence and ancient identity.

The Syriac Women’s Union (Huyodo d’Neshe Suryoye b’Suriya, HNSS) asserting that the attack was a premeditated crime bearing the marks of organized hatred targeting the Syriac Christian presence in their ancestral land.

President of the Universal Syriac Union Party (USUP) in Lebanon Ibrahim Mrad stated via Facebook that this heinous crime once again confirms that terrorism persists, fueled by extremism, division and the absence of a true state, allowing such tragedies to continue.
