Vigil in Latakia in condemnation of the Mar Elias suicide bombing
LATAKIA, Syria – In a moment of sorrow and pain, with the chanting of the words “We are children of one nation” and “Christ is truly risen,” a large solidarity vigil was held in front of the Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Church of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Latakia, in memory of the martyrs and injured and in condemnation of the terrorist attack last Sunday on the Mar Elias Church in the Douileh neighborhood of Daramsuq (Damascus).
The vigil was attended by Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Archbishop for Latakia Mor Athanasius Fahed, priests and residents of the city from all religious denominations. Various organizations and institutions participated, including the Levantine National Council, Mar Aphrem Council, Pulse of the Nation Gathering, Balad k-Amanatak Gathering. and the Christian Mercy Association.
In his address to the gathered mourners, Mor Athanasius emphasized how the Gospel inspires to confront the evil of this world with goodness and virtue. The Archbishop also pointed out the morals of the Syrian people throughout history. These values are and will remain values of civilization, knowledge and progress. They are far removed from barbarism, extremism and the ideology of rejection of others.
