Solidarity gathering in Suwayda condemns attack on Mar Elias Church
SUWAYDA, Syria — The Peaceful Movement Committee in Suwayda held a solidarity rally in Al-Karama Square yesterday, attended by dozens of activists and local residents.
The rally denounced the terrorist attack on Greek (Rûm) Orthodox Church of Mar Elias in Daramsuq (Damascus) on Sunday.
Participants raised banners affirming Syrian unity against terrorism and demanding an end to the targeting of minorities, condemning the extremist rhetoric fueling such attacks.
Slogans included ”Every Syrian has the right to live in peace” and ”Enough killing and terrorism.”
Dr. Lujain Hamza from the Movement’s Media Body stated that, “This bombing is part of a sectarian agenda aimed at fragmenting Syrian society and attacking minorities.”
“We strongly condemn this cowardly act and demand immediate action to stop the terrorist escalation threatening Syrians’ survival,” she added.
Meanwhile, lawyer Mufid Abu Ammar, head of the General Committee for the Peaceful Movement, held Syrian authorities responsible for protecting civilians, stressing the need to halt massacres against citizens, especially minorities.
Lawyer Lina Abu Hamdan emphasized Syrians’ united stance against terrorism, calling the rally a clear message rejecting such crimes and advocating for national unity.
The demonstration is part of ongoing civil initiatives in Suwayda opposing violence and extremism, reaffirming that Syria’s future hinges on citizenship, justice and peace.
