Olaf Taw Association concludes summer course for children in Beth Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria

BETH ZALIN, North and East Syria —The Olaf Taw Association for Syriac Language concluded its annual summer program in Beth Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, with a lively celebration showcasing the talents and creativity of participating children. 

The event featured traditional songs, dances, and an exhibition of handmade artwork created during the course. The multi-week program offered a blend of educational and recreational activities, including lessons in Syriac and English, mental arithmetic, drawing and coloring, and training in folk songs and traditional dances. 

Josephine Sawme, a representative of Olaf Taw’s Beth Zalin branch, highlighted the program’s goal of instilling a love for learning in children while fostering a deeper connection to their mother tongue. “We aim to combine education with entertainment to create an engaging and enriching experience for the children,” Sawme stated. 

Instructor Smedra Elias emphasized the variety of activities offered, noting the interactive and simplified approach to teaching the Syriac language, alongside folk music and mental arithmetic exercises. 

The closing ceremony included a vibrant exhibition of the children’s work and a distribution of gifts, celebrating their achievements and dedication throughout the program.
