European Parliament resolution calls for urgent protection of Christians in Syria
STRASBOURG, France — A large number of Member of European Parliament from across all political groups, yesterday evening debated a resolution which urgently calls for the protection of Christians and other smaller population groups in Syria. The motion follows the suicide terrorist attack on the Mar Elias Church in Daramsuq (Damascus), “marking the deadliest attack against Christians in years.”
The motion for resolution was partly submitted on the initiative of the European People’s Party (EPP), including MEPs Elissavet Vozemberg, Greek New Democracy party, and Sander Smit, Boer Burger Beweging.
In the resolution, still to be voted on, the MEPs express solidarity with all victims and strongly condemn the heinous and bloody attack, calling on the Syrian authorities to improve safety measures and restore the Mar Elias Church. Furthermore, considering the March massacres on Alawites and the sectarian clashes in April between the General Security Forces and Druze, the MEP’s urge the Syrian government to take all necessary actions to quell sectarian violence, ensure accountability, including by prosecuting perpetrators and enablers of human rights violations such as in the case of Mar Elias, uphold freedom of religion, and protect all communities.
The MEPs further call for Syria’s territorial integrity to be respected. After the fall of the Ba’ath regime, Israel moved into the Golan Heights to establish a deeper “buffer zone.”
Joint motion for a resolution RC-B10-0335/2025 also calls on the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, for the European Union to respond quickly on the issue and it asks for guarantees for the safety of Christian populations— i.e. Syriacs, Melkite Catholics, Armenians, Maronites, Greek (Rûm) Orthodox— in Syria.
