Dr Samir Geagea holds Lebanese authorities accountable for fulfilling state duties
MAARAB, Lebanon — The President of the Lebanese Forces, Dr Samir Geagea, affirmed that the statements made by US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria, Thomas Barrack, are directed at the Lebanese authorities and government to act responsible now. Barrack had told The National newspaper that Lebanon is facing an existential threat, and if it does not act, it may revert to being part of “Greater Syria” (Bilad al-Sham). He added that Lebanon is at risk of falling into the hands of regional powers unless Beirut acts to address the stockpiles of Iranian Hezbollah militia weapons within the country.
In a statement, Geagea pointed out that international policy intersects with a near-consensus among Arab states to reorganize the region and lift it out of the abnormal situations that had prevailed in some of its countries, in order to establish normal functioning states. He stressed that international politics does not tolerate a vacuum, and that any state that fails to organize its affairs and restore constitutional order, institutions, and actual governance will be left behind—on the margins of history.
He warned that if the authorities continue hesitating and dragging their feet in establishing a functional state in Lebanon, they will bear responsibility for once again throwing Lebanon—the nation and the state—into chaos.
Geagea emphasized that this stage is critical, delicate, and extremely decisive, and that any continued negligence by the Lebanese authorities and government in transforming Lebanon into an actual state could set the country back by decades, if not lead to something even more dangerous and severe.
