Iraqi Prime Minister al-Sudani Inaugurates reconstructed Mosul International Airport

MOSUL, Iraq — Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shayya al-Sudani officially inaugurated Mosul International Airport today, marking its full completion and readiness for operation. The opening ceremony was attended by the Ministers of Interior, Transport, and Construction and Housing, along with the Governor of Nineveh, several members of the Provincial Council, and representatives from official departments and institutions in the province.

Following the inauguration, the Prime Minister toured the airport facilities to inspect what he described as a major governmental achievement.

Previously, Nineveh Province lacked an effective air gateway. Speaking at the ceremony, al-Sudani announced that the airport would begin official operations within two months. He emphasized that the facility would improve connectivity with other Iraqi provinces and serve as a catalyst for Nineveh’s stability, economic recovery, and social revitalization.

Mosul International Airport suffered extensive destruction during ISIS’s occupation of the city in 2014. Now rehabilitated and fully equipped, the airport is capable of serving approximately 630,000 passengers annually and processing around 30,000 tons of cargo per year.

Reconstruction efforts began in 2022, with a total budget of approximately 200 billion Iraqi dinars.

In a related development, work is also underway to complete the construction and outfitting of the Ishtar Sheraton, a major hotel located in central Baghdad near Baghdad International Airport and along the banks of the Tigris River.
