Drug Raid Turns Deadly in North and East Syria, Says Local Security Force
ZALIN, North and East Syria — A pre-dawn anti-narcotics operation carried out by the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria turned violent on Saturday, leaving one officer dead and four others injured, according to an official statement from the force’s general command.
The raid targeted a suspected drug trafficker’s residence in the village of Tartab, just south of Zalin (Qamishli), an area previously under Syrian government control. The suspect, identified as a former member of the National Defense Forces militia, allegedly opened fire along with others from multiple directions, prompting security personnel to return fire.
The ensuing firefight resulted in the death of the suspect and the injury of another, while several others involved in narcotics trafficking were apprehended, officials said.
Described as “one of the most dangerous figures” in the region’s drug trade, the primary target had a documented criminal history tied to narcotics smuggling and distribution. Authorities claim his activities posed a direct threat to public safety and social stability.
The Internal Security Forces have since imposed a security cordon around the area and continue to pursue suspects linked to the drug network. Officials pledged to make further details public following the conclusion of ongoing interrogations.
“This will not deter our determination,” the statement read. “We remain committed to eradicating the scourge of drugs, which is aimed at destroying our society and targeting our youth.”
