Commander of Suwayda Military Council highlights ceasefire violations and worsening humanitarian crisis

SUWAYDA, Syria — Addressing the current situation in Suwayda, Tariq al-Shoufi, Commander of the Suwayda Military Council, stated that, “the security situation in Suwayda remains unstable.” He emphasized that the attacking forces have not respected the ceasefire agreement and have committed multiple documented violations — including attacks on innocent civilians in villages near the frontlines — all captured in both audio and video recordings.

Al-Shoufi called on international actors to intensify pressure on the attacking forces to immediately halt their operations. He affirmed that several reports had been submitted to international organizations detailing what he described as systematic acts of genocide targeting Druze, Christians, and other minorities. These reports also cite arbitrary arrests and executions of civilians based on sectarian identity.

He urged the international community to fulfill its responsibilities by pressuring the Syrian government to withdraw its forces from the province without delay. In addition, Al-Shoufi appealed to media outlets to report the truth and document the “humanitarian catastrophe” unfolding in Suwayda, which he attributed to the actions of both extremist groups and government forces.

“Today, Suwayda is a disaster-stricken city, lacking the basic necessities of life,” he concluded. “It is besieged from all sides. The public hospital has been burned and destroyed. We urgently appeal for the entry of medical and humanitarian aid.”
