Druze prince and notables from Suwayda issue urgent appeal to the international community

Suwayda/Zalin (Qamishli), Syria — Amid ongoing violence and systematic killings in Suwayda, southern Syria, which have resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, both civilians and military personnel, Druze Prince Hassan Al-Atrash and prominent notable Khaled Jammoul issued an urgent appeal to the international community and the United Nations. They stated: “Suwayda is currently witnessing an unprecedented military escalation that has led to the destruction of entire villages and towns and the displacement of thousands of families, amid a complete absence of any international or regional action to save civilians who are now without shelter, food, or medicine.”

The appeal explained that Suwayda and its countryside, due to the ongoing siege and continuous assaults, now lack the most basic necessities of life. It pointed out the absence of any border crossing through which humanitarian and medical aid can be safely and urgently delivered.

Prince Al-Atrash and Jammoul called for the opening of a humanitarian corridor, under the supervision of the United Nations, across the administrative border between Suwayda and Jordan to ensure the entry of relief convoys into the afflicted areas under UN oversight.

The appeal concluded by affirming that the people of Suwayda — of all groups and backgrounds — stand united in the face of what they described as a “brutal onslaught,” calling on all people of conscience around the world to rescue civilians before it is too late.

In a related development, civil society activists in the city of Zalin (Qamishli), in the Region of North and East Syria, including activists from the Syriac (Chaldean-Assyrian-Aramean) community, organized a protest on Thursday in support of the victims of the recent events in Suwayda.

Participants held banners that read: “We are the voice of the victims” and “Syrian bloodshed is forbidden.” In their speeches, protesters emphasized the urgent need to end the cycle of violence, called for dialogue and peace, and stressed the importance of coexistence among the components of the Syrian people and the need for international pressure to protect civilians and stop the chaos.
