USCIRF and EU pressure Syrian government over violations

DARAMSUQ – In an interview with Rudaw, U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) official Mohamed Elsanousi warned that the situation across Syria remains critical due to escalating violence and civilian killings.

He expressed deep concern over the safety of smaller components, stressing that the U.S. must continue pressuring Syrian government to fulfill its obligations toward protecting these communities.

Elsanousi revealed that USCIRF has urged U.S. to condition its economic and political support for Syria’s interim authorities on safeguarding minority rights.

He emphasized that protecting smaller components and ensuring religious freedom fall under the current authorities’ responsibilities.

Additionally, he stated that U.S. economic aid should be tied to guarantees that minorities’ rights will be upheld.

Elsanousi highlighted that the situation in Suwayda is particularly alarming following recent violent incidents.

In separate news, the EU’s foreign policy representative Kaja Kallas condemned the violent attacks in Suwayda that resulted in numerous civilian casualties.

Kallas called for an immediate halt to all violence, protection for civilians and their safety, in addition to accountability for violators and avoidance of sectarian and inflammatory rhetoric.

She reaffirmed the EU’s continued support for humanitarian partners in delivering urgent aid and urged all parties, especially the Syrian government, to ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian assistance.
