15 Years of Devotion: Yusuf Türker Turns St. Abraham Monastery Garden into Beacon of Syriac Identity

MIDYAT, TUR ABDIN — The Syriac (Chaldean-Assyrian-Aramean) people of Beth Nahrin spare no effort in revitalizing the spirit of Tur Abdin, one of their vibrant homelands, whether through the restoration of historic churches, the reconstruction of homes left behind by Syriac émigrés to Europe and beyond, opening of food establishments, or by holding cultural events and religious activities.

Yusuf Türker, President of the Midyat Churches Council, stands out as a dedicated Syriac individual who has devoted 15 years to creating a garden near the Monastery of Mar Hobil and Mar Abrohom, which bears the ancient hallmarks of Syriac culture.

According to an article published by Sizin Media in Midyat, the Monastery of Mar Hobil and Mar Abrohom has been transformed into a living garden through the sincere efforts of Yusuf Türker. Türker has dedicated his life to the church and community service, creating a garden that serves as a unifying space for all.

The publication emphasized that Türker embarked on this journey 15 years ago with the vision of “establishing a garden where everyone can gather in peace and tranquillity.” Beyond creating a green space, he has fostered an environment symbolizing brotherhood, unity, and tolerance. The garden of the Mar Hobil and Mar Abrohom Monastery has become a beacon of coexistence, celebrated not only for its captivating natural beauty but also for its authentic spirit.

The article further noted that, through the use of recycled materials, Türker transformed the garden into an open-air museum featuring intricate figures, jewellery, and handmade artifacts. The garden has become a destination for diverse societal groups and various occasions, emerging as a prominent tourist attraction and a place for relaxation.

Visitors from various cities are granted free access, on the condition that they do not cause any damage to or tamper with the fixtures. Adjacent to the garden, a café offers tea and hot beverages at affordable prices.

In conclusion, the newspaper stated: “Yusuf Türker’s garden is not merely a green space; it is the fruit of determination, high ideals, and passion. He has demonstrated the possibility of coexistence through a garden. This exemplary conduct inspires us all, for true service is not found in offices but in the field. Yusuf Türker truly deserves this recognition.”
