Pope Leo XIV leads historic Jubilee of Youth at Tor Vergata, Italy

ROME — In a powerful and harmonious display of faith and youthful energy, Pope Leo XIV presided over the Youth Jubilee celebrations at Tor Vergata on Sunday on the outskirts of Rome, where hundreds of thousands of youths gathered for a historic Mass. As the Pope arrived, the Rome Archdiocese Choir sang Psalm 100: “Cry out with joy to the Lord all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness, Come before him singing for joy.”

The Divine Liturgy brought together 20 cardinals and 300 archbishops, with Pope Leo delivering an homily urging young believers to ”aspire to greatness, to holiness.” The Pope’s Message: “Do Not Fear Life’s Fragility.”

In his address, the Pope reflected on the beauty of human existence, comparing life to a meadow that constantly renews itself. He emphasized that human heart thirsts for something no earthly thing can satisfy. Quoting Saint Augustine and Pope Francis, he encouraged youth to embrace life’s big questions rather than fear them. He called on youth to follow the examples of Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis, pursuing holiness without compromise.

Before the Mass, thousands of youth undertook a challenging journey, some walking kilometers under the Roman sun, to reach Tor Vergata. Yet, they arrived singing, waving flags and smiling, knowing they were part of a historic spiritual moment.

The Circus Maximus in Rome also transformed into a sacred space, hosting over 200 confession booths where pilgrims participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

With hymns centered on hope, the Jubilee of Youth stands as one of the most attended events of the year, reinforcing the Church’s mission to inspire the next generation.

The Jubilee of Youth (or Jubilee of Young People) took place from July 18th until yesterday, August 3rd, and intended for Catholic youth aged 18 to 35.
