President Joseph Aoun Vows Justice on Fifth Anniversary of Beirut Blast
BEIRUT — On the fifth anniversary of the catastrophic Beirut port explosion that killed more than 200 people and injured thousands, Syriac Maronite Lebanese President Joseph Aoun delivered a solemn address, promising unwavering pursuit of justice, no matter the political cost.
In a nationally televised statement, Aoun said, “Justice will not die. Accountability is inevitable.” He reaffirmed the state’s full commitment to uncovering the truth behind the 2020 blast that devastated large swathes of the capital and exposed decades of corruption and mismanagement.
Aoun emphasized that no official, regardless of rank or affiliation, would be shielded from legal consequences. “The law applies to everyone without exception,” he said, vowing to “continue pressing all relevant authorities” to ensure that those responsible face justice.
Addressing the victims’ families, Aoun said the pain and sacrifice of their loved ones would not be in vain. “Their blood will not go to waste,” he pledged.
Despite repeated political and judicial obstacles that have stalled the investigation, Aoun’s speech was a rare high-level recommitment to justice in a country where impunity has long prevailed.
