Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian people mourn Shidrak Yousif, Iraqi football legend, who passed away at 81

HABBANIYAH, Iraq — The Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community mourned the passing of one of its most celebrated sports figures as renowned Iraqi international footballer Shidrak Yousif passed away on 5 August 2025, at the age of 81, following a prolonged illness. 

Yousif was widely regarded as a symbol of pride for a people whose historical legacy has shaped global culture and knowledge. His passing marks the loss of an athlete who embodied the enduring contributions of the Chaldean–Syriac–Assyrian community across multiple fields. 

Born in Habbaniyah in July 1942, Yousif developed a passion for football early in life. He began his athletic journey with the local Habbaniyah team, where his exceptional talent quickly stood out. He later played for the Ramadi Education team before advancing to Fourth and Third Division clubs as a gifted midfielder.

Yousif’s distinguished career reached its peak when he represented Iraq on the international stage, including in the 1972 AFC Asian Cup finals. From 1965 to 1973, he proudly wore the national jersey, playing a crucial role in Iraq’s Arab Cup victories in 1964 and 1966. His exceptional performance in the 1966 tournament earned him the Best Player award. 

After Iraq’s World Cup qualifying campaign, Yousif retired from international football and, in 1975, made the unexpected decision to retire from playing altogether. By 1979, he had also concluded his coaching career, which included managing several teams and notably leading the Iraq women’s national football team. 

Following his retirement, Yousif transitioned to sports broadcasting, becoming one of Iraq’s most respected and recognizable sporting figures. Known not only for his on-field achievements, he was celebrated for his remarkable memory, enabling him to recall football history, match statistics, and iconic moments with exceptional precision. 

In his later years, Yousif founded a football academy in Ankawa, nurturing future generations of players. He also served as director of the Iraqi Sports Channel during the 1990s and later held a senior leadership role in the sports department of Ishtar Satellite Channel, further cementing his legacy as a pioneer in Iraqi sports media and education.
