Syrian Components Coordination Committee holds first coordination meeting in Brussels
BRUSSELS — The Syrian Components Coordination Committee held its inaugural meeting in Brussels on Sunday, 10 August. Formed in March of this year, the Committee serves as a platform for representatives of civil and political organizations that advocate pluralism, decentralization, and coexistence in a future democratic Syria.
European Syriac Union Foreign Affairs Representative Metin Rhawi attended the Brussels meeting as an observer. He told SyriacPress that the Committee’s creation stems from the strong desire of Syria’s diverse ethnic, religious, and cultural communities to work alongside democracy advocacy groups to develop a joint democratization plan for the country. The Committee aims to act as a collective voice and to establish formal mechanisms that promote dialogue, peace, democracy, equality, and inclusivity.
Rhawi emphasized that Syria’s true strength lies in its diversity. “By acknowledging and safeguarding this diversity, Syria can build a society in which all citizens are equal before the law, enjoying the same rights and responsibilities regardless of origin, language, or faith,” he said.
According to Rhawi, Committee members are united in their support for a decentralized political system in Syria — one that distributes power in a way that allows regions to manage most of their own affairs while preserving the country’s territorial integrity and national unity. The Committee’s shared vision also includes full constitutional equality, the use of dialogue and cooperation to resolve differences and prevent conflict, building trust among Syria’s various communities, and ensuring the protection of human rights.
