Video of execution inside Suwayda Hospital sparks outrage, UN Security Council calls for accountability

SUWAYDA, Syria — A shocking video capturing the execution of a man by gunfire inside Suwayda National Hospital has triggered widespread outrage across Syria, drawing both official and international condemnation, along with urgent calls for a transparent investigation and accountability for those involved.

The footage shows hospital staff kneeling on the ground as unidentified armed men violently drag one individual away, beat him, and shoot him at close range before moving his body elsewhere. The authenticity of the footage has been confirmed by independent dis/mis-information monitor Verify-Sy.

The Syrian Interior Ministry described the incident as “painful,” strongly condemning the act and vowing to bring the perpetrators to justice regardless of their affiliations or identities. Interior Minister Major General Abdul Qader Tahan has tasked the Assistant Minister for Security Affairs with overseeing the investigation.

This execution comes amid a surge in violence in Suwayda since 12 July 2025. The UN Security Council has documented widespread atrocities in the area, including mass killings and the internal displacement of nearly 192,000 people. In its statement, the Council strongly condemned the violations and urged all parties to ensure full, safe, and unhindered humanitarian access.

The Council stressed that accountability must extend to all perpetrators without exception, emphasizing that Syria’s recovery depends on concrete measures to guarantee the safety and protection of all citizens. It called on the Syrian government to adhere to the 1974 Disengagement Agreement and to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, including the threat posed by foreign fighters.

The statement also underscored the importance of launching a comprehensive, Syrian-led political process in line with UN Resolution 2254, enabling the Syrian people to freely and peacefully determine their future.

The video’s circulation has reignited public anger and renewed scrutiny of Syria’s fragile security situation, especially in the country’s south. It has also cast doubt on the government’s ability to prevent such violations and ensure justice amid ongoing conflict and deep divisions.
