Syriac Union Party in Qabre Hewore and Dayrik commemorates 12th anniversary of enforced disappearance of Syriac leader Saeed Malki

QABRE HEWORE and DAYRIK, North and East Syria — Syriac leader and politician Saeed Hanna Malki was a symbol of resilience and hope for the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia).

His arrest by the security forces of the regime of Bashar al-Assad in 2013 left a painful mark in the hearts of people of Beth Zalin (Qamishli), echoing across all regions where the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people reside.

Since that tragic moment, calls to uncover his fate have never ceased, and his comrades have continued to hold commemorations in various areas.

The Syriac Union Party’s (Gabo d’Ḥuyodo Suryoyo, SUP) branches in Qabre Hewore (Qahtaniyah) and Dayrik (Malikiyah) in North and East Syria held remembrance events at SUP headquarters on 13 August 2025.

The gatherings were attended by representatives of political, social, security and military institutions from the Bethnahrin National Council (Mawtbo Umthoyo d’Bethnahrin, MUB).

The events began with a moment of silence to honor the martyrs, followed by SUP statements.

A documentary was then screened, highlighting the life, sacrifices, and achievements of Saeed Malki, his contributions to the struggle of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people, the circumstances of his arrest and its profound impact on his comrades, strengthening their resolve to continue his work.

“Today, we commemorate a painful memory for all of us, the arrest of leader Saeed Malki, the absent in body but present in soul, who struggled from a young age for the Syriac people worldwide, especially in this region,” SUP Co-Chair in Qabre Hewore Branch Adib Shabo stated to our newsdesk.

“Malki is our spiritual leader,” Shabo added. “Since his arrest until today, we have been demanding that the international community, organizations, Syrian regime and all relevant or involved parties disclose his fate.”

He further explained that Malki was the one who organized the Dawronoye movement globally, laid the foundation for the struggle to secure the rights of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people and established the Syriac Cultural Association in 2005.

Shabo emphasized that the struggle continues to achieve the rights of the Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people in particular and Christians in general.

“Today, we commemorated the arrest of comrade Malki by the former oppressive regime in 2013,” Afram Ishaq, member of SUP Executive Body in Syria told our newsdesk.

Ishaq added that the remembrance serves to reassure Syriac (Aramean–Assyrian–Chaldean) people that Malki struggle path continues and serves as a demand for answers about his fate.

“Despite the fall of the regime and the opening of prisons, we have uncovered no information about his whereabouts. We will keep fighting until the truth is revealed, and we will remain at the forefront of those demanding justice and struggling to secure our people’s rights and solidify their presence in Syria,” Ishaq stressed.
