Syrian President al-Sharaa expresses hope for successful agreement with Syrian Democratic Forces

DARAMSUQ — Since 10 March, negotiations and international efforts to implement the agreement signed between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa have continued without tangible results. The agreement’s provisions remain largely on paper, hindered by interference from parties and states that view it as a threat to their strategic interests in Syria — foremost among them Turkey, whose influence has been reflected in statements by Syrian officials, including President al-Sharaa himself.

In a meeting with prominent figures in Edleb (Idlib), al-Sharaa expressed hope that Syria could avoid military confrontation with the SDF if efforts to integrate the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) into the state structure fail. He noted that SDF leaders had signaled willingness to move forward with what he described as a historic agreement, though their actions on the ground have not always reflected this commitment.

Al-Sharaa emphasized that the SDF has demonstrated readiness to implement the deal but stressed that several details remain unresolved. He also underscored that both the United States and Turkey publicly support the agreement’s full success and the peaceful resolution of outstanding issues.

Meanwhile, Qutaiba Idlibi, Syria’s US Affairs official at the Foreign Ministry, told Halab Today TV that the so-called Paris meetings are no longer active and that the French track has effectively ended. He confirmed, however, that negotiations with the SDF remain ongoing, with discussions continuing in both Daramsuq (Damascus) and the northeast.
