US delegation meets with Syrian President al-Sharaa, meeting between al-Sharaa and SDF General Commander Abdi expected in Amman
DARAMSUQ / AMMAN — Amid ongoing tensions between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and with little progress on the 10 March agreement between Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) General Commander Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, a high-level US delegation traveled to Daramsuq (Damascus). The talks followed the Syrian government’s withdrawal from the Paris negotiations, citing the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES) convening a Conference of the Unity of Components in Hasakah.
The delegation included US Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack, senior Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen (NH) of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and US Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC-2). They met with Syrian political, military, and religious officials to discuss the latest developments in Syria and across the region.
Abdi, who had arrived in Amman on Monday, held talks with the US delegation prior to its meeting with President al-Sharaa. Discussions focused on the implementation of the 10 March agreement, with Abdi stressing that the SDF must be integrated into the Syrian Army as a unified structure rather than as individuals.
Although no further details were released, observers noted that the talks likely also covered the drafting of a new Syrian constitution to safeguard the rights of all communities, ensure pluralism and decentralization, and sustain cooperation with the US-led International Coalition in combating the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organization.
Separately, the delegation met with President al-Sharaa. Congressman Wilson posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“It was my honor to meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa as part of a bipartisan delegation — alongside Ambassador Barrack and Senator Shaheen — to discuss a bright, unified, and stable future for Syria. This trip was particularly meaningful for me, and I am grateful for the warm reception. The time for FULL Caesar repeal is NOW. As a priority of President Trump’s administration, I remain committed to this critical and bipartisan goal.”
According to a report by the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the delegation discussed with al-Sharaa “the progress that has been made on the security situation and other US priorities within Syria.”
Shaheen met with Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Hind Kabawat to discuss strengthening civil society, ensuring accountability for war crimes, advancing peace and reconciliation efforts, and supporting economic recovery and post-conflict reconstruction.
She also held talks with Abdi where she expressed US support for the SDF and its eventual integration into the Syrian Armed Forces.
In addition, Shaheen attended a peace and dialogue conference at a Christian monastery, where she met with multi-ethnic and multi-faith religious leaders as well as representatives of Syrian civil society. At the historic site, she underscored the importance of building a democratic Syria that upholds the rights of all its citizens.
General Abdi and President al-Sharaa are expected to meet on Tuesday to discuss regional developments, reconcile differences, and explore practical steps toward implementing the 10 March agreement.
