People’s Democratic Council of North and East Syria approves amendments to Media Law and confirms new leadership appointments

NORTH AND EAST SYRIA — During its 116th session, the People’s Democratic Council of the Democratic Autonomous Administration of the Region of North and East Syria (DAARNES), chaired by Co-Chair Siham Quryo, approved final amendments to the 23-article Media Law, which will take effect immediately upon issuance.

The session, attended by Council Deputies along with DAARNES Executive Council Co-Chairs Avin Sweid and Hussein Othman, also addressed a series of organizational decisions and confirmed several new appointments.

Among them, Leila Ibrahim Mahmo and Ibrahim Ali Muhammad were confirmed as Co-Chairs of the Authority for Religions and Beliefs, while Rasha Ahmed al-Khidir and Jwan Muhammad Murad were elected to chair the Environmental Council.

In a notable move, the Council relieved Gabriel Shamoun of his duties and appointed Joseph Masyo as the new Deputy Co-Chair of the Executive Council. Yahya Ibrahim was also named Co-Chair of the Legislative Council in Tabqa Canton.

Following their confirmations, the newly appointed officials took their oaths before the Council.

According to Council sources, the Media Law amendments focus on core articles regulating media activity in the region, amid ongoing debate surrounding press freedoms and oversight.

DAARNES continues to consolidate its political and legislative structures despite the lack of official recognition from the Syrian government and persistent regional and international pressures challenging its political and administrative project.
