Qayyarah air base outside Mosul, Iraq targeted by mortars
MOSUL – The Iraqi Security Media Cell confirmed the targeting Qayyara Air Base, the largest in the Nineveh Governate, Iraq, with five mortars on Friday. The targeting did not result in any material damage or human casualties. The identity of the perpetrators is still unknown.
Military bases in Iraq have been subjected to rocket and mortar attacks recently, including Ain al-Asad and Balad airbases. Both bases host American forces.
The north and west of the country has witnessed numerous terrorist attacks recently, targeting security points and oil fields, especially in Kirkuk and Salah ad-Din Governates.
In December 2017, Iraq declared the liberation of its entire territory from the grip of the Islamic State after nearly three and a half years of conflict with the terrorist organization. At one point, the Islamic State occupied roughly a third of the country.
