SYRIA: American reinforcements and new military base in Deir al-Zor

Deir al-Zor, Syria – American forces seek to strengthen their presence in areas east of the Euphrates. The U.S. army recently started establishing a new military base in the al-Jazarat region in the western countryside of Deir al-Zor. This coincides with the expansion of its base in the al-Omar oil field east of Deir al-Zor. Numerous trucks were reported to have brought logistical and military reinforcements to this base. Also noteworthy is that only recently, an American military convoy arrived from the al-Waleed border crossing with Iraq to Qasrok base in the Tel Baidar area of al-Hasaka countryside.

The strengthening of American presence and an increase in military forces – up to an extra 200 soldiers are reported to have been stationed there – comes along announcements by the Pentagon and the International Coalition against ISIS to continue its cooperation for the Syrian Democratic Forces in combating the terrorist organization ISIS. Military positioning seems to be an element in the fight in the Deir al-Zor region where ISIS activity and attacks have increased.
