U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announces $ 204 million in aid to the Iraqi people, Iraqi PM al-Kadhimi visits D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. / BAGHDAD — During a press conference alongside Iraqi Foreign Minister, Fouad Hussein, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. will provide approximately $ 204 million in additional humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people, Iraqi refugees, and the communities that host them in an effort to help stabilize the country.

Minister Hussein stated that his country has a strong alliance with the U.S., stressing that the Iraqi decision must be determined only by the Iraqis. Furthermore, Baghdad wants normal relations with the neighboring countries without interfering in its affairs.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi arrived in Washington, D.C. on a visit that will see al-Kadhimi take a series of meetings focused on bolstering Iraq’s economy and rebuilding the country after the war against the Islamic State. Al-Kadhimi will also meet the U.S. President Donald Trump.
