Syriac Patriarchs meet. Patriarch al-Raï meets US ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy Shea
BETH KERKE, Lebanon – Mor Béchara Boutros Raï, Syriac Maronite Patriarch of Antioch, met with US Ambassador to Lebanon Dorothy C. Shea to discuss America’s support for the Lebanese people in light of the difficult crises in the country. The Patriarch thanked the US ambassador for her country’s continuous support for Lebanon, especially its support for the Lebanese army. He also stressed Lebanon’s need to return to its original nature and identity, based on neutrality, coexistence and fair participation in governance between Muslims and Christians. On her part, ambassador Shea affirmed continued US support for the Lebanese people.
On the same day, the Mor Béchara received the Syriac Catholic Patriarch of Antioch Mor Ignatius Joseph III Younan. In the brotherly visit, the two church hierarchs discussed a number of ecclesiastical, social and national issues. Both Churches follow the West Syriac Rite. Together they some 1.1 million followers with the borders of Lebanon.
Later that day, Mor Béchara met with Future Bloc representative Sami Fatfat to discuss political issues, foremost of which were the upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections. He stressed in particular the need for elections to be held on time.
In the evening, Mor Béchara received a delegation from the administrative body of the Maronite General Council headed by Michel Matta. The delegation also gave a presentation of the council’s social and humanitarian activities and expressed its support for the Patriarch’s stances on national issues.
