Armenians of Beth Nahrin commemorate 107th anniversary of Ottoman genocide of Christian peoples

BETH NAHRIN — On the 107th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire’s genocide of the Christian peoples within its territory that killed between 1.5–2 million Armenians and hundreds of thousands of Syriacs (Arameans–Assyrians–Chaldeans) and Greeks, the Armenian people of Beth Nahrin (Mesopotamia) held commemorative events.

In Zalin (Qamishli), North and East Syria, the Armenian Orthodox Church held a candlelit march through the city. A Holy Liturgy was held for the souls of martyrs and the scouts performed songs of loss and commemoration. A wreath was placed at the tomb of the martyrs.

In Sardam Hall in the Al-Msherfa district of Hasakah, North and East Syria, the Armenian Social Council and Martyr Nubar Ozanian Brigade commemorated the genocide.

The remembrance event included a military parade and several speeches discussing the atrocities committed by the forces of the Ottoman Empire and its local allies.

A video documentary about the events of 1915 was shown and the Ararat Troupe performed Armenian folk songs and dances. A theatrical performance entitled “Truth Never Dies” was also performed.

In the Bab Touma neighborhood of Daramsuq (Damascus), a commemorative event was held including speeches and Armenian songs.

In Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), the Armenian Cultural and Social Association held an event, which included placing a wreath at the local monument for martyrs, speeches, poems, and songs. The children of Association members performed a play about the martyrdom of the Armenians in 1915 and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of children and women.
