The Syriac Orthodox Churches in Syria celebrate Pentecost
ZALIN (QAMISHLI), Syria – On Sunday, Orthodox Churches across Syria celebrated Pentecost, a day which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ while they were in Jerusalem.
During the Pentecost Holy Liturgy, which comes 50 days after Easter, the priest speaks about the meaning of this feast and its importance to the Church.
He also blesses water with special prayers and sprays believers inside the church with the holy water.
The priests in churches of Syria stressed that today, more than ever, we need the gifts of the Holy Spirit, especially after the crises that have afflicted the Middle East.
“We also need the spirit of truth, strength, love and peace, in order to be good witnesses to Christ,” said the priests.
The feast of Pentecost is usually celebrated by spraying each other with water, especially the children, as an expression of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles.
