Syriac Catholic Patriarch Younan inaugurates Saint Ephrem Monastery and visits several churches in Mardin, Turkey

MARDIN, Turkey — The Syriac Catholic Patriarch Mor Ignatius Youssef III Younan visited Mardin and other regions in Tur Abdin in Turkey.

After the monastery restoration, the Patriarch inaugurated and consecrated the Mor Ephrem Monastery of the Syriac Catholic Mardin Foundation. The monastery dates back to 1881.

His Holiness also visited the Armenian Catholic church of St. Joseph and Chaldean church of St. Hormuz in Mardin, Turkey.

His Holiness was accompanied by the Apostolic nuncios to Turkey Archbishop Marek Solczyński, Apostolic Vicar of Istanbul and administrator of the Byzantine exarchate in Turkey Archbishop Massimiliano Palinuro and a number of archbishops.

During his visit to the two churches, His Holiness held a prayer of thanksgiving there, and listened to a detailed explanation of their history. The Mor Hormuz Church was a parish administratively affiliated with the Chaldean Archdiocese in (Omid) Diyarbakir.

While St. Joseph Church was a center for the Armenian Catholic Archdiocese of Mardin, and one of its most prominent archbishops was Martyr Ignatius Maloyan.
