Nineveh Plain in Iraq: A place of diversity and home for Christians, Muslims, Yezidis, and Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians, Arabs, Kurds, Shabaks, Turkmen and Kaka’is

NINVEH PLAIN, Iraq — The Irfaasawtak website published a report on the Nineveh Plain region in Iraq, which is considered a historical home for the Chaldean-Syriac-Assyrian people thousands of years ago.

“Among all regions, the Nineveh Plain has a unique position because it is home for people of all races and ethnicities. It is a place of diversity that includes Christians, Muslims, Yezidis, and Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians, Arabs, Kurds, Shabaks, Turkmen and Kaka’is,” said the report.

The report added that the Nineveh Plain is characterized by multiple languages, including Syriac, Arabic, Kurdish and Turkmen.

It also detailed the history of the Nineveh Plain and its successive civilizations, which are considered the main reason for the diversity of its peoples and religions.

It also reported that the descendants of the Chaldeans-Syriacs-Assyrians, Babylonians and Arameans are the original inhabitants of Iraq, who are generally called the Syriac people, adding that many cities and villages of Nineveh Plain still bear Syriac names, such as Karamlesh and Bartella and others.

The report sheds light on the Christian archeological sites in the Nineveh Plain, such as Church of Martyr Gorgis, ancient Al-Tahira church in Baghdede, in addition to churches of Mor Yacoub, Mor Youkhanna and Mor Zena. It also includes 20 monasteries.
