Syriac Mike Josef new mayor of Frankfurt, Germany

FRANKFURT, Germany — Syriac candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) Mike Josef won the runoff election for the mayoralty of Frankfurt, Germany, against his Christian Democratic Union (CDU) opponent Uwe Becker.

The 40-year-old received 51.7 percent of votes in a runoff election on Sunday. Becker received 48.3 percent.

Josef hails from Zalin (Qamishli) in North and East Syria.

He emigrated with his family to the Baden-Württemberg region as a child and completed his education in Frankfurt. He was previously the city’s head of planning and sports.

Josef, who is SPD chairman in Frankfurt, focused on social issues, such as affordable rents, during the election campaign.

Around 510,000 voters cast their votes on Sunday, a turnout of 35.4 percent.
